When it comes Detoxification or detox, there are a range of detox aims or purposes ranging from a general-purpose detox to targeting specific body parts such as the liver, right through to tackling addiction. A quick full body detox cleanse targets the general-purpose end of the detox spectrum.
When starting out, you don’t really want to start on a specific detox. Colon cleansing, for example, is often recommended as part of a detox plan, but it can cause cramping, bloating, nausea and vomiting and dehydration can also be a concern. Starting out with something like this will most likely put you off detox for life… and we don’t want that!
A quick detox is basically a jump-start to get your internal organs working better for you so they can effectively eliminate unwanted substances. The best way to start is to enhance your body’s natural detoxification system with a combination of diet and behavioural changes.
Just to play devils advocate for a second here, popular detox diets have been criticised for not identifying the specific toxins they aim to remove or detail how they are removed, but we will be addressing that elsewhere in this blog, not in this article.
Although the title of the article states 3 days, you can initially aim for two days if that makes things easier. Maybe if you are just starting out. As far as the diet side of a quick detox goes, you can go down two main routes:-
A juicing diet where you blend fruits and vegetables and consume these only
A non-juicing diet where you consume prescibed whole solid foods and recipes like salads, cutting out all processed foods.
There are no hard and fast rules here to begin with. You can even try a combination of juicing and non juicing detox regimes or just try one or the other. The important thing is to find whatever works for you!
Mental preparation and recognition of a certain amount of discipline you will need will help greatly! It will be at least a bit of a challenge. Something that isn’t necessarily easy, but anything worth doing isn’t easy, right? Targeting a 2/3 day initial detox is ‘doable’. You can do it!
Be aware of any side effects and just accept them as just what they are… some temporary, slightly uncomfortable states that will pass.
These can include for example feeling grouchy if you choose to cut out caffeine and/or sugar.

The Steps below suggest food and drink alternatives but to getting a diet plan together for each day is a good way to help you stick to the detox…

STEP 1) Start your day with some lemon water…
Extract the juice from half a lemon into some filtered waterr. The pectin from the lemon aids in digestion. Lemon is a good detoxifying food.
STEP 2) Hydration throughout the day, Have your water intake measured out and ready to go…
Being properly hydrated regulates body temperature, aids digestion and nutrient absorption and detoxifies by removing waste products. As a rough guide aim for about 3 liters of water a day to maintain good hydration
STEP 3) Breakfast…
No bread, cereal or variant of them! They cause your body to retain more water. Go for protein to provide satiety. For example, egg-and-salmon scramble which also contains metabolism-boosting omega-3s… a great start to the day.
STEP 4) Clean up your diet: Reduce Sugar and Processed Foods and increase antioxidant-Rich Foods…
Aim for whole, real foods only. Lot of veggies, lean protein like grass-fed steak, chicken, fish, eggs and healthy fats from nuts, seeds or olives, avocado or coconut.
Eating less junk food will keep your body’s natural detoxification system healthy.
Sugar and processed foods are a root cause of today’s public health crises lunked to obesity and a range of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. These diseases then reduce your liver and kidneys natural detoxification function by harming these organs. Drinking lots of sugary beverages can cause fatty liver, negatively impacting liver function.

Smoking, alcohol and a poor diet can produce excessive free radicals which can damage your body’s cells and lead to ‘oxidative stress’… a condition caused by the excessive production of free radicals. Eating a diet rich in antioxidants can help protect against oxidative stress and cell damage caused by ‘free radicals’ which have been implicated in a number of conditions, such as heart disease, liver disease, dementia, asthma, and certain types of cancer.
Get antioxidants (vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, lycopene etc) from food rather than supplements, which can actually increase your risk of diseases when taken in large amounts. If you are sticking with coffee you are in luck as it is an antioxidant-rich beverage, as is green tea. Other good sources include berries, fruits, nuts, cocoa, spices and vegetables
STEP 5) Improve your gut health with prebiotics
The Gut plays an important role in detoxification. Prebiotics are a type of fiber that feeds the good bacteria in your gut called probiotics essential for gut health and enabling your good bacteria to produce nutrients called short-chain fatty acids that are beneficial for health.
Poor dental hygiene, and/or diet quality can cause the good bacteria in your gut to become unbalanced with bad bacteria which can weaken your immune and detoxification systems and increase your risk of inflammation and disease.
Eating prebiotic rich foods can keep your immune and detoxification systems healthy. Good sources of prebiotics include bananas, tomatoes, artichokes, asparagus, onions, garlic, and even oats!
STEP 6) Reduce or cut alcohol out
More than 90% of alcohol is metabolized in your liver into acetaldehyde which is known to cause cancer. Excessive drinking cause a whole range of health problems including liver fat buildup, inflammation, and scarring, and prevents the liver from functioning properly to filter waste and other toxins from your body.
STEP 7) Tea detox…
Tea detox is a whole discipline in and of itself. (More on that elsewhere in the blog) You can try Dandelion tea during your short detox to improve digestion and help you to stay hydrated which is linked to everything from a healthy metabolism to energy and good skin health. Alternatively, Green tea will give you an antioxidant and metabolic boost.

STEP 8) Exercise…
Increasing your heart rate will mean an increase in blood flow which helps your body to flush out toxins. Regular exercise is associated with longer life and a reduced risk of many conditions and diseases… all of the usual suspects… type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
Exercise reduces inflammation is key in the role it plays to reduce the risk of developing these chronic conditions and improves your bodies natural powers of detoxification
Moderately intense exercise like a brisk walk each day, and/or, more vigorous physical exercise like as running or the gym a few times a week can make a huge difference from a sedentry lifestyle. And ofcourse, your 2/3 day detox regime is a perfect opportunity to kickstart a new lifetime habit.
STEP 9) Sleep…
Quality sleep is essential to support your body’s natural detoxification system and actually removes toxic waste byproducts that have accumulated throughout the day. for example a protein called beta-amyloid linked to the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Insomnia and sleep deprivation does not give your body time to perform these functions which means toxins can build up effecting a range of potential health hazards. Lack of sleep has been linked to stress, anxiety, high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.
Try to get at least six if not seven to nine hours per night on a regular basis.
Stick to a sleep schedule. Switch off mobile devices and computers prior to bedtime!
