According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated one and a half million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year. They have also estimated that more than half a million patients will die from cancer this year. These numbers are terrifying. No one wants to be diagnosed with cancer, and no one wants to think about how cancer could affect his or her life. Despite that, for 1.6 million people, the “C” word is going to become part of their vocabulary this year.
If diagnosed, your entire life will change immediately. You may have to make quick and difficult decisions about your care, your family, and your life. There is good news. Experts estimate that more than half of all cancer cases are preventable. That means you can drastically lower your own risk with simple lifestyle changes that are within your power. You might not be able to alter family history or previous exposure to cancer- causing chemicals, but you can do everything possible to prevent cancer from this moment onwards.
Lifestyle changes encompass a broad range of topics such as stress, smoking, exercise, and what toxins you may be unknowingly exposed to at home and work.
In this first module we’re going to focus on nutrition. What you put in your body is 100% under your control and it is an area of your life that you can make drastic changes to right now, today, without delay.
Hippocrates ... the father of modern medicine ... is often quoted back in 400 BC as saying, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” More than two thousand years ago, he had it right.
The Western diet is filled with disease-causing foods that are proven to raise your risk of illness and death. In fact, our poor eating habits are gradually making their way to other countries – and those nations are feeling the effects of over-processed, pre-prepared foods that are high in bad fats, high in refined sugar, and overflowing with toxic additives – just as we are.
In order to stop disease, we have to stop the cycle of eating garbage.
If you choose to eat a diet rich in antioxidants and nutrients now, you may be able to prevent yourself from becoming a cancer statistic. Research has shown that cancer can be prevented, and by eating a healthy diet, you can drastically reduce your personal risk.
In these first two modules we’re going to do a deep dive into the best and worst foods that we believe you should be eating regularly (and avoiding!) in order to reduce your risk of cancer and stay healthy for many decades to come.
An added benefit is that all of the recommended foods are good for your whole body! Adding them to your eating plan will not only lower your risk of cancer, they will lower your risk for other serious conditions such as obesity, heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, and diabetes.
When you incorporate these and other healthy foods into your diet, you can boost your immunity, strengthen your bones and muscles, and improve your cellular health. All of these benefits keep cancer cells from thriving in your body.
If you eat healthy, can you still get cancer? Well yes, of course you can.
However, eating right and living healthy will lower your risk far below the average person – especially in the Western world.
To remain healthy and strong all your life, you cannot make excuses to yourself. You cannot put off eating right until you don’t have a choice (once disease or surgery forces you to do what you need to do for your body). The time to act is before you get sick.
